An Ecuadorian Salon Experience

After being on the road for about two months, it was time for a trim up.  Besides the fact that I was seeing old friends and attending a wedding in a few short days…it was getting a bit unruly.  I’m always on the look-out for a deal.  While I was sitting in the chair with a small Ecuadorian girl with sharp scissors cutting away; I thought to myself “maybe a deal on a haircut isn’t the best choice”.

On our early excursions around Quito, I had spotted a place that looked promising.  Only $2usd for a haircut and $2 usd to get my brows waxed. On our last full day in Quito, Teresa and I made a mission to get back there and get my new Ecuadorian hairdo.  Going to a new hairdresser is always an interesting experience…you never quite know what your going to get.  I am familiar with this experience because I travel in the US and am rarely able to go to the same hairdresser more than twice in a row.  Compound this with the fact that I don’t speak or understand well the Spanish language and I was more than a bit timid….but, it needed to be done.

Fortunately for me there were pictures and I pointed to one that was similar to what I wanted and sat down.  The girl behind the sheers was delightful.  With a smile and determination, she wet my hair and began cutting.   And….OH, DID SHE CUT!!   I immediately knew that this was going to be much shorter than I had hoped.  I don’t have long hair anyway, so a little goes a long way.  I was suddenly reminded of  Betsy; a blogger from Married with Luggage that I follow that recently SHAVED her head to promote her values reflected in her new book Strip Off Your Fear.  The thought of this calmed me.  I realized that who and what I am is not truly reflected in a hairstyle.   I took a deep breath and sat quietly as she proceeded.

The end result, although shorter than I wanted, turned out to be just fine.  In fact, after having a few days to get accustomed to it, I quite like it.

I would encourage all of my female readers to download Betsy’s e-book and read it!  It’s very encouraging.  I found myself constantly shaking my head ‘yes’ as I was reading it.
