The Street Gourmet: Good or Bad?

The one thing that all of the guidebooks are consistent about is the dangers of street food.  They will consistently warn you AGAINST eating from the street vendors.  I must say that I DISAGREE.  In my experience, the street food has proven to be the better of the meals that I have had.  This holds true in LaPaz.  We have eaten only two meals in restaurants and both have been “blah”.

The street food, however…..Has been AMAZING.

This one is of me enjoying my shared bowl of Quinoa and Potato soup.  BEST EVER!!

Teresa indulged in a street hotdog!!  See the smile….she was feeling the comforts of home.  As my Dad would say….everyone loves a good hotdog.

This is the Tuna Fruit that I consumed happily just around the time that my bag was slashed…..it really was good!  I have searched this picture for the slashing culprit and all I can deduce is that it was probably the shifty eyed little girl to my left elbow.  She looks quite suspicious….don’t you agree?

Popcorn!!  Who doesn’t like a good handful of popcorn?  This had a slightly sweet flavor.  I had to try it but as everyone knows; popcorn isn’t my favorite.  I think it might have something to do with growing up next to a popcorn field and being made to go out and pick up the cobs after the pickers went through…not much fun.

Freshly squeezed Orange Juice!!  First, what a cute little cart…right?  Second, full of pulp!!  I love pulp!!

Sonso de Queso…..cheesy goodness wrapped in a light dough.  Very rich and filling.

Teresa enjoying our Quinoa and Potato Soup.  We shared a bowel and both walked away with smiles and full bellies.

Fried Pork Sausage, Fried Chicken and Fried Potatoes!!!   Need I say more?

I’m still waiting for my chicken and Teresa is happily enjoying her sausage.  It’s a bit of a ramshakle place but the food was great.

So, my verdict?  Eat the street food.  Eat it often and enjoy it.  I’m certain that you have just a good of a chance of falling ill from a local restaurant as you do from a street vendor.  The goood thing about the street vendors is that you see the food cooking and can pick and choose by sight and smell vs a picture and description on a written menu.  GO FOR IT.

What’s your opinion on street food?  Do you avoid it?  Have you had bad experiences from eating from the street?  Or do you indulge in it happily (like me).  What’s the best street food you have eaten?  Share with me!!
